What we check

Getting shutters right on a sash window

The meeting rail

Where the top and bottom sashes meet. Tier-on-tier shutters can split at the same height, so the shutters follow the lines of the window.

Catches, lifts and locks

Sash windows have fittings that stand out from the glass. We position the shutters to keep them clear of those fittings.

The reveal

Period sash windows often sit in deep reveals, ideal for fitting shutters neatly inside the recess. Shallower ones can take a frame around the opening.

The details

Sash window shutters, explained

Which style suits a sash window?

Tier-on-tier is the natural match: two sets of panels that follow the two sashes, so you can close the bottom for privacy and leave the top open for light.

Full height panels give a cleaner, simpler look, and suit tall sashes in living rooms and bedrooms.

Café style covers just the lower sash, ideal for a ground-floor window onto the street. Compare the styles → · Georgian & Regency homes →

Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian sashes

Georgian sashes are often tall with slim glazing bars; Victorian and Edwardian ones usually have larger panes, sometimes with horns at the bottom of the top sash. Each looks different behind a shutter, so we suggest louvre sizes and panel layouts to suit the window, not a standard size.

Original folding box shutters

Some period homes still have their original folding box shutters, built into the sides of the window. Plantation shutters are a good choice where the originals have gone, or for windows that never had them. More on original shutters in Bath homes →

Draughty or sticking sashes

Shutters are made to fit the window as it is, so if a sash is rattling or sticking, it's best sorted before we measure. We don't repair timber sashes, but if a pane is cracked or broken, the Bristol Windows and Doors team can replace the glass.

Questions

Sash windows: your questions

How much do sash window shutters cost?

Sash window shutters cost £400 per square metre in white and £500 in colour, fitted and with VAT included. Two sash windows of about 0.9 m × 1.6 m come to about £1150 in white, or £1450 in colour. Your exact price comes after the free home visit.

Can I still open my sash windows with shutters fitted?

Yes. Fold the shutter panels back, then slide the sash up or down as normal. At the measuring visit we note how far each sash travels and where its catches and lifts are, and the shutters are made around them.

Will you fix the shutters to my original sashes?

No. The sashes need to slide, so nothing is fixed to them. The shutter frame goes in the opening around the window, and at the visit Matt recommends the fixing for each window that does the least damage and looks best.

Can the shutter split line up with the middle of my sash window?

Yes. With tier-on-tier shutters, the split between the top and bottom panels can be set to line up with the meeting rail, where the two sashes meet. It keeps the window looking balanced.

Do shutters work on uPVC sash windows too?

Yes. Modern uPVC sash windows slide in the same way, and many also tilt inwards for cleaning, which needs a little extra room. We allow for that when we measure.
