What we look at

Getting shutters right in a Georgian home

  • Tall sash windows

Georgian windows are often tall and narrow, with many small panes. Tier-on-tier shutters, or full height with a rail across the middle, keep the panels a sensible size and follow the lines of the window.

  • Deep reveals

Thick walls give deep window recesses, so the shutters can often sit inside the reveal and look as if they were always there.

  • Panelled reveals and window seats

Some windows have panelling, mouldings or a seat in the recess. Matt checks each one and plans the shutters to work with it.

  • High ceilings, upper floors

Tall rooms and upper-floor flats in converted townhouses often suit full height or tier-on-tier panels.

  • Louvre size

On windows with small panes, narrower louvres often look more in keeping.

  • Colour

White is the classic choice, and there is a range of standard colours if you would like something different.

Questions

Georgian homes: your questions

Can you fit shutters in a flat in a converted townhouse?

Yes. Tall windows in converted townhouses suit shutters well, and on upper floors they look neat from the street. We measure and fit them just as we would in a house.

My window has panelled reveals. Can shutters still go in?

Usually, yes. Depending on the depth and the panelling, the shutters can sit inside the reveal or on a frame in front of it. Matt looks at each window and explains how it would sit before anything is ordered.
