Café style shutters

Café style shutters: privacy from the street, light from the sky.

Café style shutters, sometimes called half shutters, cover just the lower part of the window and leave the top open. People walking past cannot see in, and the room keeps all the light from above.

Why people choose them

What café style shutters do well

  • All the light from above

The top of the window stays open, so the room keeps its daylight and its view of the sky.

  • Privacy at street level

People walking past cannot see in, which is exactly what most ground-floor rooms onto the pavement need.

  • Less shutter, lower price

We price by area (£400 per square metre in white, £500 in colour, VAT included), and café style covers less of the window, so it usually costs less than full height on the same window.

  • Clear of the sink and worktop

In a kitchen, short panels sit above the worktop and are easy to reach, and the top stays clear.

Questions

Café style shutters: your questions

How high do café style shutters go?

Usually about half to two-thirds of the window. Where the window has a bar across it, we normally line the top of the shutter up with it so it looks neat. Otherwise we set the height to give you privacy from the street.

Do café style shutters give privacy at night?

Partly. With the lights on inside, people further away can see in through the open top of the window. If you want the whole window covered in the evening, tier-on-tier shutters give you the same daytime look and a top tier you can close as well.

Are café style shutters good for a bathroom?

Yes, they are a popular choice. The bottom of the window, where you need the privacy, is covered, and the room keeps its light. Our composite shutters are waterproof, so they suit a steamy bathroom. If the window is inside a shower, ask us first.
