Six things worth knowing
A little light at the edges
Closed shutters make a room much darker, but a thin line of light gets in round the panels and between the louvres. That is normal for every plantation shutter, and it is why they are not blackout.
Panels that swing into the room
Hinged panels open into the room, so they need space in front of the window. We check furniture, radiators and windowsills at the visit, and suggest folding panels or a different style where room is tight.
Windows that aren't square
Many windows, old and new, are a little out of square. We measure every corner, and the frame takes up the difference so the panels sit straight. Where the sides of the window opening (the reveal) are very uneven, you may see a slightly wider gap at one side.
A frame round the window
Most shutters sit in a slim frame fitted to the window opening. It is what keeps the panels square and lets them close neatly.
A wait while they're made
Every shutter is made to your sizes, so it usually takes around 4 to 6 weeks to make, then we book your fitting. If you are in a real hurry, we can supply and fit in as little as 2 weeks. The factory charges extra for this, and your quote shows it.
Fitting day
A standard window takes about an hour, a bay about half a day. We fit the frames and panels, check every panel and louvre moves smoothly, tidy up and show you how they work.
What to expect: your questions
Will I be able to see the frame?
Yes, a little. The frame is slim and the same colour as the shutters, so it looks part of them. Where the window has a deep enough reveal, the frame sits inside it and shows less.
Can I see what they will look like before I order?
Yes. At the free home visit we bring samples of the louvres and colours, so you can see them against your own windows and in your own light before you decide.
Can shutters be cut down or moved to another window later?
Not to a different-sized window. Each shutter is made to the exact size of one window, so it isn't made to be cut down or moved to a different one. That's why Matt measures every window himself and we agree the layout with you before anything is ordered.
My room is quite dark. Will shutters make it darker?
Fold the panels back and most of the window is clear. When they're closed, you tilt the louvres to let in as much or as little light as you like. Wider louvres give a clearer view out, and café style leaves the top of the window open all day. Matt brings samples so you can see them in your own light.
