How to clean and look after shutters

  • Dust them now and then

A soft duster, a microfibre cloth or the brush on your vacuum, run along each louvre. Tilt the louvres one way to do the tops, then the other way to do the undersides.

  • Wipe them when they need it

A soft cloth, damp not wet, with a little mild soap if they are grubby. Dry them straight away with a clean cloth.

  • Open them gently

Tilt the louvres with the tilt rod, or by the edge of a louvre if you have invisible tilt. Open and close the panels by the frame of the panel, not by pulling on the louvres.

  • Give the panels room

Keep ornaments, plants and lamps on the windowsill clear of where the panels swing, so nothing gets knocked and the panels close properly.

Please avoid

  • Bleach, polish or strong chemical cleaners
  • Scouring pads or abrasive sponges
  • Soaking them or using a steam cleaner
  • Forcing a panel that catches on something

Questions

Shutter care: your questions

Do shutters need much looking after?

Very little. Dust the louvres now and then, and for a deeper clean wipe them with a soft damp cloth and a little mild soap, then dry them straight away. Don't soak them, and don't use bleach, abrasive sponges or strong chemical cleaners. There are no cords to tangle and no fabric to wash.

How do I look after shutters in a kitchen or bathroom?

Our composite isn't harmed by steam from cooking and showers or by splashes, so it suits kitchens and bathrooms. Just don't soak it or use a steam cleaner on it, as that can damage the finish and the hinges. Wipe off grease near the cooker or water marks near the basin with a soft damp cloth and a little mild soap, then dry it. Tilting the louvres open after a shower lets air move round the room.

The louvres won't stay where I put them. Can they be tightened?

Yes. There's a tension screw in the side of each panel, and a small turn with a screwdriver stiffens louvres that feel loose. We show you how on fitting day, and in the first year we'll come back and adjust it free if you'd rather.

Do shutters collect dust?

Like any flat surface, the louvres gather some dust. Tilt them one way and run a microfibre cloth or the vacuum brush along them, then tilt them the other way for the undersides. There's no fabric to hold dust.

Do shutters help with allergies or hay fever?

There's no fabric to trap dust or need washing. We can't promise they'll help with an allergy, but there's nothing to wash.
