Tier-on-tier shutters

Tier-on-tier shutters: privacy below, light above.

Two sets of panels, one above the other, and each opens on its own. It suits street-facing bays and sash windows especially well.

Four ways to use them

One window, set the way you want it

  • Daytime on a busy street

Close the bottom panels, open the top ones. People walking past cannot see in, and the room still gets daylight from above.

  • Evening

Close both tiers and tilt the louvres shut. The whole window is covered, the same as full height shutters.

  • A bright day

Fold every panel back and the whole window is clear.

  • Somewhere in between

Each tier has its own louvres, so you can tilt the top open and keep the bottom closed, or the other way round, without opening a panel.

Where they work best

Tier-on-tier suits these windows

Street-facing bays

The classic Bristol terrace bay, right on the pavement. Privacy at the bottom, light at the top.

Bay window shutters →

Sash windows

The split between the tiers can line up with the middle of the window, where the two sashes meet.

Sash window shutters →

Tall windows

On a tall window, two shorter panels are lighter to open than one long one, and you only open the part you need.

Questions

Tier-on-tier shutters: your questions

Where does the split go on tier-on-tier shutters?

Usually where the window itself is divided, such as the bar across the middle of the window, so the shutters follow the lines of the window. If the window has no divide, we set it at a height that gives you privacy from outside. We go through where the split goes with you at the visit, before anything is ordered.

Can I open just the top panels?

Yes. Each tier opens on its own, so you can fold the top panels back for light and fresh air and keep the bottom ones closed for privacy. You can also tilt the louvres in each tier separately.

Can tier-on-tier shutters go on a small window?

It depends on the height. Each tier needs to be tall enough to work well, so on a small window one panel is usually better. Matt will tell you at the visit.
