Casement windows, the kind hinged at the side or top, are found in homes all over Bristol and Bath. Shutters suit them well, as long as they are planned around the openers, handles and bars.

Getting shutters right on a casement window
Windows that open outwards
Most casement windows open out, away from the shutters, so the two rarely get in each other's way. Fold back the panel in front of the handle, then open the window as normal.
Top openers
Many casements have a small window at the top that opens on its own. With tier-on-tier shutters you can fold back just the top panels to open it, and keep the bottom closed.
Bars across the window
Where the window has a bar across it, we can line up a rail or the split between tiers with it, so the shutters follow the lines of the window.
Handles and safety catches
Casement handles stand out from the frame. We plan the frame and panels so they clear the handles and any safety catches (restrictors), and tell you at the visit if a window needs anything different.
uPVC, timber or aluminium
We fit shutters to all three. The shutter frame is fixed into the window opening or to the wall round it, and Matt recommends the best place for your windows.
Fixed panes
Wide casement windows often have fixed panes next to the opening ones. The shutter panels can be sized to match, so it all looks even.

Casement windows: your questions
Can you fit shutters to old timber casement windows?
Yes. We look at the condition of the frame and how it opens, and fit the shutters so they work with the window. If something needs attention, Matt will tell you at the visit.
