Furniture, radiators and windowsills: planning for shutters.

Shutters fit the window, but they live in the room. A few minutes thinking about what sits near each window means they open freely and look right from day one.

What to think about

Six things near the window

  • Room for the panels to swing

Hinged panels open into the room, about as far as each panel is wide. Keep that space clear, or choose narrower panels that fold back in pairs.

  • Beds and sofas under the window

If a bed or sofa sits right up to the window, the panels may hit it. Tier-on-tier can help, because the top panels open on their own above the furniture.

  • Radiators below the window

The shutters can stop at the windowsill so the radiator below stays clear, or sit as café style above it. Matt checks the gap between the radiator and the shutter at the visit.

  • Windowsills and window boards

The shutter usually sits on or just above the board. Keep plants, lamps and ornaments clear of where the panels swing, or leave them where they are and use the louvres instead.

  • Sockets, switches and alarm sensors

Anything beside the window, such as a socket, a light switch or an alarm sensor on the frame, needs to stay reachable. We note them when we measure.

  • Old blinds and fittings

Blinds, nets and their brackets usually need to come down where the shutters go. Please take them down before fitting day; Matt will point out what's in the way at the visit. If that's hard for you, just tell us and we'll see if we can help (it isn't part of the quote).

Questions

Planning for shutters: your questions

Can I put my bed or sofa under a window with shutters?

Yes, as long as there is room to open the panels or you are happy to use the louvres most of the time. Tier-on-tier often helps, because the top tier opens on its own above the furniture.

Can I still use my windowsill with shutters fitted?

Usually, yes. Matt will show you where the shutter will sit and how far the panels swing.

I've got a radiator under the window. Will shutters block the heat?

The shutters can stop at the windowsill, so the radiator below stays clear. Matt checks the gap between the radiator and the shutter at the visit.
