Getting shutters right in a period home
Bays onto the street
Most Victorian and Edwardian terraces have a bay at the front, often right on the pavement. Each window in the bay is measured on its own and the panels meet neatly at the corners.
Sash windows, original or replaced
Original timber sashes, new timber sashes or uPVC replacements: the shutters are lined up with the sashes and planned around the catches, so the windows can still open.
Deep reveals
Thick walls often leave a deep recess round the window. Where there is room, the shutters sit inside it, so they look built in and the wall around stays as it is.
Walls that are not straight
After a hundred years or more, few walls are truly straight or square. We measure every corner, and the frame takes up the difference so the panels hang straight. On a very uneven wall you may see a slightly wider gap at one side.
Tall windows and high ceilings
Tall windows suit full height shutters, or tier-on-tier so you only open the half you need. A rail across the panel can line up with the window bars.
Mouldings and windowsills
Where we can, we fit inside the reveal so the plaster mouldings, architraves and windowsill stay on show. Matt checks each window and tells you how he would fit it.

Period homes: your questions
Do plantation shutters suit a Victorian house?
Yes. Folding inside shutters have been part of British homes since Georgian times, and plantation shutters, with their wide louvres, sit just as well with tall bays and sash windows. Many people choose white for a classic look, or a colour to match the woodwork.
Can shutters go on the narrow side windows of a bay?
Yes. The side windows of a period bay are often narrow, so they usually take a single panel each, made to its own size and matched to the front windows so the whole bay looks the same.
Will shutters cover my original mouldings?
Usually not. Where the reveal is deep enough, the shutters sit inside it and the mouldings round the window stay on show. Where a frame has to go on the face of the wall, Matt will tell you at the visit and explain how it would sit.
